The learner can thus use the application as an audio book by reading and listening to the comic book’s dialogue in their mother tongue or in the language they want to learn. While reading, the user can activate different features to improve and test understanding, enrich vocabulary and perfect pronunciation.
The LingoZING application can be used by teachers. It is also aimed at French-learners who love comic books, who want to combine reading for pleasure with practice and language development; it can thus be used independently. Titles are classified by genre, audience and level of French.
The application offers the following functionalities in addition to its reading and subtitling functions: - Custom vocabulary directory: ability to select bubbles and save them to create your own directory of words or statements and then search them using an online dictionary; - LZgram: allows readers to record and test their pronunciation using a voice recognition system. The learner's speech is compared to the original speech. If it is at least 70% similar, an option allows you to share the recording with the thumbnail image on social media (Facebook, Twitter) or send it by text or imessage. This exercise allows users to test their pronunciation, emphasis and intonation; - Slow audio reading: ability to slow down the reading speed of a phrase to clearly hear its pronunciation. A French as a Foreign Language (FLE) educational support booklet, with a supplement for Portuguese speakers, was designed by the Institut français. It facilitates the use of the tool and assists the teacher by providing reading keys and teaching methods through ready-to-use educational handouts.
